Subjects: Management Science >> Science ology and Management Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Processing submitted time 2024-06-06

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate the coverage and accuracy of author identification number (author ID) of the major bibliographic databases and to assess whether they could be directly used in empirical research.
Methods The ground truth data set consists of articles from 825 Chinese scientists. The coverage, accuracy, and robustness of each author ID are calculated by retrieving and collecting the IDs of scientists and their respective publication information in the bibliographic databases. The validity of the author IDs for empirical research is assessed by replicating a top journal empirical article using the data collected through author IDs.
Results First, WOS, Scopus, AMiner, and OpenAlex can retrieve more than 90% of Chinese scientists’ identifiers, while ORCID’s coverage is less than 50%. Second, the accuracy of Scopus is the highest at 85.2%, and the accuracy of OpenAlex is the lowest at only 51.2%. Third, directly using the publication data collected through author IDs for empirical research will introduce non-negligible bias.
Limitations The ground truth data set is limited, because it is mainly composed of young scientists, and lack scientists from social sciences and humanities.
Conclusion At present, the author identification number of the major databases cannot be directly applied to the empirical research of large-scale data. A standardized information platform for scientists’ publications is needed to overcome the author-name disambiguation problem.

  • Evaluation of social influence of academic books of philosophy and social sciences in China under the environment of open science--Taking the three Provincial Philosophy Society Achievement Awards as an Example

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Library Science submitted time 2024-04-15

Abstract: Purpose/significance Open science emphasizes the social influence of scientific research achievements. As an important manifestation of scientific research achievements in philosophy and social sciences, it is necessary to evaluate and study the social influence of academic books in the discipline. Method/process Combined with existing research and the characteristics of online communication of academic books in an open science environment, Altmetrics index was mined based on domestic network media platform to explore and establish a set of index system for evaluating the social influence of academic books in philosophy and social sciences. The award-winning books of the 14-16 Jiangsu Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award were taken as research samples. The principal component analysis method was used for weight analysis. Result/conclusion The index data of Altmetrics of academic books of philosophy and social sciences are quite different, and the correlation between the indexes of different platforms is low. There is a big gap in the social influence of high quality academic books. Under different evaluation dimensions, there are obvious differences in the influence of academic books in philosophy and social sciences. The authors of academic books should strengthen the concept of open science, pay attention to and take the initiative to publicize academic books through various network platforms; Promote the establishment of social impact data integration platform to ensure the effectiveness and stability of data; Strengthen the evaluation of social influence of books, and more comprehensively evaluate the influence of academic books; It is suggested to introduce relevant policies to encourage the promotion of social influence of academic books.
