Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2023-04-01 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Understanding the pattern of scientific collaboration between Mainland China and the USA-the world's leading producers of scientific publications, could be beneficial to decision-makers in research and health policy in creating and adjusting anti-epidemic strategies.[Method/process] Taking publications related to SARS and COVID-19 as research objects, this study explored the collaboration patterns of the Mainland China and the USA from the perspectives of research effort, collaboration strength, collaboration network and major fields on the basis of classification of collaboration types and improvement of Salton's index.[Result/conclusion] Both the Mainland China and the USA are the main contributors to the research on SARS and COVID-19, while the attention of the Chinese scholars to relevant research tends to change with the situation of the epidemics. Although Mainland China and the USA were the closest partners for each other in SARS and COVID-19 research, the collaboration strength between the two countries is obviously lower in COVID-19 research than that of SARS research. The USA is at the heart of both SARS and COVID-19 collaborative networks, while Mainland China's position is significantly lower. As for the research fields, Mainland China and the USA have different emphasis on the discipline distributions.

  • Technology Convergence: Connotation, Status, Measurement, and the Relationship with Interdisciplinary Science

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2023-04-01 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] The intersection and infiltration between disciplines and the convergence and integration of technologies are essential forces to promote the development of modern science and technology. By clarifying the connotation of technology convergence, this paper explores its research progress and measuring indicators, so as to provide a reference for understanding the knowledge structure of technology convergence and related research. [Method/process] We firstly employed the literature survey and bibliometrics methods to analyze the connotation of technology convergence and technology fusion. Then, we visualized the distribution of discipline and theme for technological convergence research and summarized the measurement indicators from the perspective of diversity and cohesion. Finally, we further clarified the similarities and differences between technology convergence and interdisciplinary research. [Result/conclusion] Technology convergence and technology fusion have the same connotation in many cases, and the subtle differences between them are reflected in the convergence patterns. Measuring the degree of the technology convergence includes two perspectives: 1) diversity scope: introducing the three dimensions of variety, balance, and disparity; 2) cohesion scope: concerning the network attribute of technology fields. From the first-order and second-order theme, the research activities of technology convergence and interdisciplinary are similar. Interdisciplinary indicators of the same perspective and dimension also provide a reference for measuring the degree of technology convergence, diversity and measuring the convergence relationship between different technologies.

  • A Quantitative Study on the Dynamic Relationship Between Scientific Research and Health Needs:Taking Neurological Diseases as an Example

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2023-04-01 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance] The advancement of science and technology plays a vital role in safeguarding human life security and enhancing human well-being. Quantitative research on the dynamic relationship between scientific research and health needs could provide beneficial references for layout and resource allocation of scientific research.[Method/Process] On the basis of construction of a quantitative analysis framework of the relationship between scientific research and health needs, this paper took one of the world's major disability and mortality causes, namely neurological diseases, as a case study and used scientific academic publications, multiple indicators of disease burden (disability-adjusted life years, number of fatalities, research-dependent fraction of global burden of disease) and the Human Development Index (HDI) from 2000 to 2019 to explore the matching, correlation, and regression relationships between the burden of neurological diseases and scientific research outputs.[Result/Conclusion] The results show that the burden of neurological diseases and academic outputs have been increasing globally from 2000 to 2019. In general, the scientific community has given more than adequate attention to such diseases, but some of them (e.g., migraine) have been relatively poorly studied. From the perspective of countries at different HDI levels, the burden of neurological diseases is mainly concentrated in very-high level countries, and such countries are also the main contributors of relevant research. In terms of specific diseases, very-high level countries have paid less scientific attention on diseases (e.g., epilepsy) with relatively high burden in low- and medium-level countries. The regression analysis show that increase of disease burden had a positive impact on academic outputs. Further, the number of academic outputs is affected greater by the number of deaths in comparison to the disability-adjusted life years. In addition, the existing limitations of an innovative indicator "research-dependent fraction of global burden of disease" are also demonstrated by this paper, and some related suggestions are put forward based on the data results.
