  • The development status and countermeasures of Chinese Gold OA and Diamond OA journals

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Philology submitted time 2024-01-31

Abstract: Purposes To analyze the characteristics of domestic and abroad Gold OA journals and Diamond OA journals indexed in the DOAJ database, and provide reference for the development of OA in academic journals in China. Methods This study retrieved and analyzed the subject classification, language, CC license, peer review strategy, publication status, and other characteristics of global and domestic Gold OA journals and Diamond OA journals indexed in DOAJ for statistical analysis. Besides, this study analyzed the publication status and awareness of OA in domestic journals through a questionnaire survey. Finally, summarized the OA development strategies. Findings Among the 20015 OA journals indexed in DOAJ, English journals accounted for the vast majority (16111 journals). Among them, 66.26% were Diamond OA journals that mainly focused on social science. The distribution of CC license types is mainly concentrated in CC BY, followed by CC BY-NC and CC BY-NC-ND, and the types of peer review strategy were relatively scattered. DOAJ only indexed 318 Chinese journals up to now, which was different from the global journals index in DOAJ: English journals slightly outnumbered Chinese journals, with a higher proportion of Gold OA (65.41%), which were mainly focused on scientific, technical and medical (STM) journals. The most commonly used CC license was CC BY-NC-ND (accounting for 72.32%), with single blind and double-blind peer review as the main peer review methods. The questionnaire survey results showed that many domestic journals were not very familiar with the DOAJ database at present, and the proportion of Chinese journals included in the DOAJ database is still relatively small among the journals with the actual publication mode of OA. The OA models adopted by domestic journals mainly on Bronze OA; The journals selected for the "Excellent Action Plan for Chinese STM Journals" and newly established English journals mostly adopt the Diamond OA model. Conclusions At present, the proportion of Gold OA and Diamond OA journals in China is relatively small, while, the Bronze OA journals account for the highest proportion in China along with insufficient clear OA declarations and copyright agreements compared with Gold OA and Diamond OA journals. Clear regulations on the retention and transfer of copyright, as well as strict implementation of the CC agreement could help OA journals regulate the scope of rights and obligations of all users. The Golden OA and Diamond OA models are the development directions of OA journals in China. Referring to the inclusion evaluation criteria of the DOAJ database would be helpful for the OA development of STM journals in China.

  • The research and strategy analysis of Chinese biomedical journals applying for international databases: taking China Oncology as an example

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Philology submitted time 2023-09-22

Abstract: Purposes  This paper aims analyze the current situation and key points of the index of Chinese biomedical journals in major international databases, in order to provide references for other domestic biomedical journals to apply for international database inclusion and enhance their international influence.   Methods The current status of Chinese biomedical journals indexed in international databases (Scopus, Embase, DOAJ, MEDLINE, PMC, WoS, etc.) and the key points of inclusion were analyzed. The experiences applying for international databases in the China Oncology were taken as an example, the problems in applying for an international database were summarized, and solutions were proposed. Findings The inclusion of Chinese biomedical journals varies among databases, and overall, the number of Chinese journals included is limited. In recent years, Scopus, DOAJ, and PMC developed rapidly, indexed both Chinese and English journals; SCIE mainly indexed English journals, ESCI has started indexing Chinese journals, while index standard of MEDLINE and PMC increasingly rapidly. Improving the academic quality of articles published in biomedical journals is critical. In addition, journals should strengthen the construction of world-class bilingual websites in Chinese and English, establish and implement various policies, long English abstracts is encouraged and thereby could improve the display level of journals. Conclusions The total number of Chinese biomedical journals indexed by international databases has been increasing year by year, but the number still needs to be raised. The index of Chinese biomedical journals in international databases helps to promote the construction of journal policies and world-class websites of the journals. It also helps to improve the content quality of journals, facilitate the rapid dissemination of academic results, and thereby enhance the display and international influence of Chinese biomedical journals.

  • The current situation and prospects of internationalization of Chinese medical journals: analysis and enlightenment on the inclusion of Chinese medical journals in international databases

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Library Science submitted time 2023-09-20

Abstract: Purposes  By analyzing the current situation and main points of the internationalization of Chinese medical journals indexed in major international databases, in order to provide reference for other domestic medical journals applying for international database inclusion and improving the internationalization level of Chinese medical journals.   Methods Statistics and analysis are made on the current situation of journals indexed in international databases (Scopus, Embase, DOAJ, MEDLINE/PMC, SCI, Ulrichweb and EBSCO) and their latest indexes of Chinese medical journals, to deeply analyze the application strategies and summarize the significance of inclusion. Findings In recent years, Scopus, DOAJ and SCI databases have developed rapidly, and the number of the indexed Chinese medical journals has increased significantly, both in Chinese and English; SCI mainly includes English journals, and the number of journals has increased rapidly. The inclusion methods and standards of different database varied from each other. Improving the quality of medical journals is the cornerstone of journal internationalization, and academic quality is an important indicator of world-class journals. In addition, journals should strictly implement publication deadline, establish and implement various systems, appeal for increasing English content and the long English abstracts, and strengthen the website construction of international first-class journals. Conclusions In recent years, the internationalization of China's journals has increased year by year, with a significant momentum of internationalization, but the number of journals included in international databases still needs to be improved. The inclusion of Chinese medical journals in international databases is conducive to the growth of various aspects of the journal, the rapid dissemination of academic achievements, and the improvement of the display and international influence of medical journals.
