• Research on the Contribution of the Number of Patent Families to the Value of Patents ——Taking Solar Energy as an Example

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Research on the contribution of the number of patent families to the value of patents can provide an important reference for patents strategy layout optimization and patent value evaluation. [Methods/process] Taking the new clean solar energy field as an example, we identified high-value and low-value patent data sets, and designed experiments on patent family size differences between high-value patents and low-value patents. Finally, then SPSS 22 was used to verify the model. [Results/conclusion] Empirical research have shown that the contribution of the number of patent families to the value of patents is not invariable. With the continuous expansion of the patent families, the proportion of patent families is no longer significant difference between high-value patents and low-value patents. At this time, the increase in the number of patent families has significantly reduced the contribution to patent value.

  • An Empirical Study of Scientific Evaluation Based on the Correlation Between CNCI and Peer Review

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] In order to make some recommendations for responsible metrics and peer review, the paper analyses the feasibility of Category Normalized Citation Impact(CNCI) and its correlation with peer review.[Method/process] By choosing F1000 and InCites, this paper conducted the correlation analysis between CNCI and citation counts of 29,850 cell biology papers and 30,326 biotechnology papers, and performed the test of spearman rank correlation coefficient between the CNCI and F1000 scores of 956 cell biology papers.[Result/conclusion] The results show that CNCI is positively correlated with citation counts, and significantly correlated with F1000 rating, but there are contradictory situations for the two indicators at the same time. Therefore, CNCI can reflect the results of peer review, substitute for the indication of academic influence, and also can be used for comparision among disciplines. However, peer review or CNCI will be biased for scientific evaluation purpose alone. Then, tools that link responsible metrics indicators, such as CNCI and informed peer reviews would be valuable additions to the field of research evaluation.

  • A Method of Identifying Key Research Directions

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] The identification of key research directions (KRDs) is significant to the management of scientific research and the formulation of policy. Existing methods of quantitative analysis mainly used indicators based on novelty, growth and other characteristics to identify and recommend KRDs. This paper used the relationships of research directions further and identified KRDs from network topology and characteristic two dimensions. [Method/process] On the basis of the building of citation network of papers in a field, a large-scale network clustering algorithm was used to detect research directions, and the topic association network was built. Then, identification algorithms of important nodes in complex networks were used to identify KRDs from the dimension of network topology, and an index system of selecting KRDs was constructed by combining three indicators of characteristic dimension, including novelty index, growth index and H-index. [Result/conclusion] After an empirical analysis of the field of nanotechnology, with the experts' interpretation, the paper concluded that growth index, Gefura and weighted PageRank are more objective and stable. Finally, 208 KRDs were identified by synthetically using above three indicators.

  • Analysis on the Effectiveness of Citation Evaluation Methods in the Research Field Identification by Co-Citation Network

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] To investigate field-normalized reference influence indicators on the level of papers, the effectiveness of a citation evaluation method (Relative Citation Ratio, RCR) based on the research field identification by co-citation network is analyzed.[Method/process] In order to test the effectiveness of RCR in the evaluation of academic impact, the paper chose iCite, F1000, InCites, then took 739 604 articles as a sample, and analyzed the correlation among RCR, Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) and journal impact factor (JIF) by the R language.[Result/conclusion] The paper shows that RCR strongly correlates with CNCI, and poorly correlates with journal impact factor, which indicate the similarities and differences between RCR and CNCI and confirm that it is a good practice for implementing San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment and assessing research on its own merits rather than on the basis of the journal in which the research is published. It also turns out the inverse relationship of the correlation and the number of interdisciplinary subjects between RCR and journal impact factor in interdisciplinary science, and lower correlation between RCR and journal impact factor than in a single discipline, which appears the applicability and effectiveness of RCR in evaluating the influence of academic papers in interdisciplinary science. The paper concludes that RCR based on research field identification by co-citation network provides new solution for the evaluation of paper influence, especially for interdisciplinary research outputs.

  • Research on Knowledge Structuring and Value Realization Path of Major Scientific Discoveries: Taking Patents of Japanese Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine as an Example

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Major scientific discoveries are of great significance to promote scientific and technological progress and enhance influence. Exploring the knowledge structuring and value realization path of major scientific discoveries can provide important enlightenments for deepening the reform of scientific research system in China. [Method/process] Taking the invention patents of Japanese Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine as research objects, by analyzing the data of the patent application time, the number of applications, maintenance time, the number of inventors and ownership status, this paper revealed the regular characteristics of structuring knowledge and realizing commercial and social value in the patent system. [Result/conclusion] The formation of major scientific discoveries is the unity of continuity and discontinuity, the unity of quantitative change and qualitative change and the unity of technological accumulation and technological revolution. The openness of patents can promote the structure, openness and socialization of knowledge represented by major scientific discoveries, and feed back to the improvement of the whole discipline and social public welfare.

  • An ESI Research Fronts Knowledge Evolution Analysis Method Based on Knowledge Element Variation

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] As an exploratory research, this paper is oriented to the needs of scientific and technological information in the specialized discipline domain, and aims to realize the quantitative analysis of key semantics of the full text and the practical application shift from "information automation" to "knowledge automation". On the basis of previous studies from the perspective of knowledge element co-occurrence to explore the evolution mechanism of ESI research fronts, this paper further proposes a research front knowledge evolution analysis method based on knowledge element variation. [Method/process] Firstly, knowledge elements were represented as word vectors by word2vec word embedding model. Then, this paper calculated Euclidean distance of knowledge element vectors, and identified knowledge element clusters with similar semantic and pragmatic association by K-means clustering method. Finally, TF-IDF values of each knowledge element in the diachronic cluster were calculated. Through the quantitatively measurement of sudden changes in the importance of knowledge elements, the characteristics and rules of knowledge element variation were mined in the process of ESI research fronts evolution. [Result/conclusion] Through the comparative test of the detection results, it is found that the scientometric method based on knowledge element variation is not only a supplement and expansion of the previous research methods, but also makes the mining of the internal knowledge movement law of ESI research fronts more specific and detailed. Moreover, in the scope of time series, it is a strong evidence that the future development trend and key information signals of the ESI research fronts can be detected as soon as possible.

    Abstract:【目的】结合链路预测与机器学习, 提出推荐未来科研合作的新方法, 以提高单独基于链路预测方法的推荐精确度。【方法】构建加权作者合作网, 以不同的链路预测指标作为特征输入, 运用极端随机树(Extremely Randomized Trees, ET)机器学习算法训练分类, 并利用遍历算法求取分类结果的最优权重组合, 选取TOP 准确度的预测作为合作推荐结果。【结果】选取纳米科技领域2008 年–2010 年SCI 论文数据进行实证。在城市合作推荐中, 改进的ET 方法优于已有方法, 有良好的推荐成功率; 预测方法受网络结构等因素影响较小, 适用范围更广泛。【局限】科研合作受合作动机、地域、语言等诸多因素影响, 加权作者合作网没有反映在一篇论文中同城市、同机构的多个作者, 也没有反映上述因素。【结论】改进算法能够比单个预测指标产生更准确的合作推荐建议, 也为推广到大学等机构、个人等更微观的应用层面提供参考。

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Dealing with the interactive relationship between universities and afflicted think tanks is an inevitable topic to chase independence and influence for think tanks affiliated to universities while taking advantage of research abilities and resources in universities. [Method/process] According to the “input-operation-output” frame, by literature/network investigations and case study, this paper discussed the interactive relationship from multiple aspects of three periods respectively regarding resources input, operation assistance and income coordination. [Result/conclusion] Think tanks affiliated to universities should make the utmost use of knowledge resources and research abilities to build capacity and offer counterpart returns in knowledge at the same time. Keeping autonomy in operation and finance is also highly emphasized.

    Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Considering urgent demands on the organization reform of China’s think tanks, this paper discusses about the operation mechanism of knowledge capital in think tanks and provides practical advice through establishing an added-value knowledge capital path and applies it to the case analysis. [Method/process] By literature review, network investigation and case study, this paper grasped detailed information about think tanks regarding the structure of knowledge capital and the process of knowledge transformation and dissemination. [Result/conclusion] The specific practices of how think tanks drive their added-value knowledge capital mechanism are listed out and four main suggestions on the reform of China’s think tanks are put forward.
